Flossing is great as it removes pieces of food stuck between your teeth, but it also positively impacts your gums! When you floss properly, you are removing micro-debris from your gumline that can build up over time and cause a problem. The Canadian Dental Association states that 7/10 Canadians suffer from some form of periodontal disease, and this number could be greatly reduced if everyone flossed. Flossing is most effective when paired with regular tooth brushing! Make sure you floss before brushing your teeth, as this can break up any food or particles stuck in between your gums. The recommendation for brushing your teeth is to brush twice a day, for two minutes each time and floss once daily. Try flossing before your nightly brush, as this is the best way you ensure no food stays stuck in your gums! Despite our best efforts, some things need to be left to a professional! As we can only clean so much ourselves, plaque will eventually build up over time. As this hardens and becomes “tartar” only a dentist or hygienist will be able to remove it from your teeth. Make sure you are getting a checkup at least twice a year to prevent this from happening!
