Summer is the perfect time for families to get together and enjoy the warm weather. From beach days, to playing at the park and taking a break for a picnic lunch, nothing gets much better than that! However, the summer heat also brings ice cream, sodas, and other sugary beverages that may not be the best for your teeth. According to the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association, cavities and oral diseases are often caused by a diet high in sugar. Luckily, there are preventative steps you can take to avoid this issue. The next time you pack your picnic lunch, consider some of these healthier foods and beverages to keep your smile healthy and strong all summer long.
Vegetables
As our mothers used to say growing up, “Eat your vegetables!” This statement still rings true. According to the Canadian Dental Association, carrots, celery, and raw broccoli should be packed for your next picnic. Not only are they healthy for you, but they also help remove plaque build-up, and they stimulate saliva to naturally wash away any excess debris.
Dairy Products
Most of us have heard that calcium is great for your teeth. Yogurt and milk are awesome options, however, it might be easier to pack either a cheese platter or to throw a slice of cheese on a wrap or sandwich for your next summer outing.
Seedless Fruits
Yes, fruits contain natural sugar, however, there are a couple of seedless fruits in particular that are healthy for your teeth. Perhaps the best option is sliced watermelon. Because it’s primarily made of water and lower in sugar, it helps naturally rinse your teeth as you chew. Apples are another favourable option. Not only do they help remove plaque from teeth, but they can also freshen breath.
Water
Instead of alcohol, sodas, and sugary sports drinks, stick to water. The Canadian Dental Association Fact Sheet tells us that tooth decay is the most common health condition in the world, typically caused by diets high in sugar. Water is one of the best ways to hydrate our bodies in the summer heat. It’s also the best drink for our teeth! It rinses, refreshes, and moisturizes our mouths for a cleaner, healthier smile.
