Has It Been Years Since Your Last Dental Visit? Don’t Worry!

Its not uncommon for people to keep postponing their dental appointments. The problem is, before they know it, its been two or more years since their last checkup, and now they are anxious about coming in for a visit.

If you’re nervous about coming in for your overdue appointment, the following tips can help you reduce your anxiety:

Talk to our team about your fears, we will help anyway we can.

Focus on maintaining a slow and relaxed breath during your appointment.

Do not have caffeine before coming in.

Our team wants to help you feel at ease when you come to our Ancaster dental clinic. We put together this blog post to help you understand what to expect when you come in for your first appointment after a few years.

1. Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are among the best tools to check in on your oral health. Dr. Ghane will take several X-rays to ensure you don’t have any underlying problems beneath the surface of your mouth.

2. Extended Cleaningys

A prolonged period without seeing a dentist could mean that the surface of your teeth have a significant amount of plaque. To help reduce plaque, make sure you consistently brush your teeth twice a day. Additionally, flossing at least once a day will help to maintain your oral hygiene and reduce the amount of time our hygienist will need to clean your teeth.

3. Your Gums May Bleed

Due to the pressure involved in professional cleaning, your gums might bleed. Please note that this should not concern you. It is a normal occurrence after not completing regular dental exams. You can help reduce the chances of your gums bleeding by flossing at least once a day to help strengthen them. Please let us know if you experience gum bleeding on a regular basis, as it could be an indicator of periodontal disease.

4. Comprehensive Mouth-check

Once the hygienist cleans your teeth, our dentist will meticulously inspect your mouth for potential problems such as cavities or signs of gum disease. If you haven’t seen Dr. Ghane for a while, you may need a cavity filled.

What Next?

After your full examination, Dr. Ghane will advise you on your next steps. This could include recommendations on how to maintain good oral health, or to make a follow-up appointment.

Before you leave our dental office, ensure you schedule your next appointment in six months, even if you are free from cavities. Biannual cleanings help in reducing the risk of oral health problems!
